Rye United 2 v 2 Cobham, FA Vase 2nd Round, November 17th 2007
Report by Andy (thanks to Nick McGregor for the details).
Cobham earned a replay against Sussex County Football Division 1 side Rye United in the FA Vase 2nd round in a game with 4 goals, 2 red cards and the odd scuffle.
It all started horribly for the away side as they proceeded to play like they'd never seen each other before allowing Rye to get a two goal head start with the double whammy coming in the 14th and 43rd minutes. Thankfully the Hammers managed to pull themselves together enough to peg the home side back before half-time with Marcus Rose scoring his third of the season on the stroke of half-time.
Then it all kicked off....
Reports say that players and fans squared up to each other, girlfriends ran onto the pitch to protect their delicate boys with general name-calling all round. The referee's response? An extra 5 minutes at the break for everyone to calm down!
The second half saw Cobham pick up their game and deservedly get the equaliser through Adam Fennell. Then it all kicked off again as a goal-mouth scuffle ensued which resulted in a player from both sides being sent off - for Cobham Rose was the guilty man. The half continued with Cobham mostly in charge but with no change to the scoreline which meant 30 more minutes of extra time....
The extra period saw the away side finishing strongly and they were denied a penalty in the second period of 15 minutes meaning that after 120 minutes the two teams were stilled tied and so have to do it all again in a replay. Should be an interesting affair!
