Match Report

Cobham 3 v 2 Epsom & Ewell, League, December 1st 2007

Report edited from Epsom & Ewell FC website - http://www.eefc.net/

Epsom & Ewell came away from Anvil Lane without any points despite a last ten minute fightback from 3-0 down that saw the E's nearly grab a three all draw. Epsom & Ewell, despite having the upper hand in the opening fifteen minutes, succumbed to a sucker punch off the fifth successive corner on 17 minutes, the ball floating to the back post for Michael Cayford to head home under no pressure from any Epsom players and questions were being raised who was supposed to have been on the post as if there was, the header could have been blocked. The Epsom side then started to lose their formation and shape as the midfield and defence appeared to merge into one. More needless giving of corners to Cobham and another shambolic Epsom defensive display on 34 minutes gifted the hosts a second goal, the ball crossed in finding Andrew Dalhouse jumping unchallenged to guide the ball inside the far post - once again questions were raised about who should have been on the post.

The half-time rant by the Epsom management did not seem to do the trick as Epsom were continuing to give away needless corners and failing to get out of their own half, and the hosts eventually made it three on 58 minutes, the corner into the box seeming to skid low through the six yard box and being converted in the middle of the goal by Jimmy Davies. With just under twenty minutes to go a few changes to the visitor's line-up sparked them into life and they scored what everybody thought was a consolation goal on 84 minutes. Within 90 seconds the comeback was on as a corner seemed to drift out of play as it came across but the assistant referee deemed that it had not, with the cross back in being hit home from 5 yards out. Epsom then had a further chance to equalise but it was just pushed wide of the far post by Cobham 'keeper Chris Duffy's glove.
